Joy x well-being

Whatever you do, ask yourself and answer truthfully, are you really happy.

You might hold a certain high post, be part of a certain prestige company and be rich in terms of wealth. At the end of the day, you slogged, you work for the sake of working. Are you really happy with what you have?


Whereas, a man who works as a rag and bone (Karung Guni), does not even have a decent education certificate, working just to make ends meet is contented with what he have.


He enjoys using spare parts that he have picked up to repair his old bicycle or other electronics that people have dumped at the rubbish chute.

He feels contented, good about himself because he made that trash worked again and finds joy in what he is doing. This man is richer than any of you. He has access to the amount of happiness that we do not have.


Do you want to be man no.1 or man no.2?


Alrighty, long intro and so today we are going to be talking about the importance of happiness and how it affects of well-being (especially at work).


What is happiness?

Happiness is an emotional state that defines whether you are happy. It is not a surprising fact that everyone has a different standard of what makes them happy. What can make me happy might not be what could possibly make you happy. For instance, I love baking and by baking brownies, it makes me happy.


The importance of happiness

So why should we be happy?


We have this saying that goes "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy".


Exactly! You are brought to earth to live and experience life not work and work and work until you drop dead.


Work hard and look forward to rewarding yourself for working hard. Know what you are working hard for, have a goal, and trust me, it drives and brings you further than you think.


Goals serve as an achievement and gives you motivation to spur you on to work harder. This in turns make you a happier and contented person.


How happiness affect your well-being

What if I say the happier you are, the prettier or handsome you are?


Well-being by the dictionary definition means the state of being comfortable, healthy or happy.

Well-being by my simplified ah lian definition means whether you are living well as a being on earth or not. So, are you?


Here's a general guideline contributing to happiness in oneself:

  1. Excercise - It releases endorphins and you feel good about yourself as you get into shape.

  2. Nutrition - Indulge in occasional guilty treats and be mindful about what you eat. Ever notice that those sugary foods make us 'high'? That's because they release dopamine (a happy chemical) in our body. So sweet treats, anyone?

  3. Positivity - Sometimes you just need a chill pill. Take it easy and take a long stroll by the road in the middle of the night. You needn't take everything to heart. Don't think so much and care less. You'll be happier and more productive.

  4. Relationships - Are the people you are working with make you feel bad about yourself? Leave. You don't deserve that sort of treatment. They don't deserve you.

In conclusion

One's happiness should not be build on other's happiness nor misfortune, It should come from within yourself to feel the true form of happiness.

Be a DIVA, feel good about yourself.


Stop sulking about tomorrow, you never know if you are gonna die tomorrow. Live every single day to its fullest. Do what you like to do, you decide what to do with your life.


I would like to borrow this chance to quote Neil Heilborn, one of my favourite poet, "I saw the future, I did, And in it, I was alive."


The future probably looks bleak but don't give up, yet.
