What is Bread Pudding?
For the benefit of those who have yet to come across this English dessert, I am honored to introduce and tell you more about this dessert.
Bread Pudding is a type of dessert that literally means Bread and Pudding. It is usually served warm with glazed icing on top of it. It tastes slightly buttery has both the spongy texture of a bread and the soft, creamy and thick texture of a pudding.
The main ingredients for this dessert are essentially butter, milk, eggs, sugar and bread. Pretty basic ingredients right?
I must say this recipe will come in really handy when dealing with breads that we left outside for more than 5 days or aren't that fresh anymore. Read on to find out more about why's that so!
Origin
This amazing dessert was discovered in Europe back in the early 11th and 12th century. Its popularity has been growing since and as its popularity grew, it has been a popular dish in England since the 13th century.
Bread Pudding was invented as a frugal mean to use up stale bread. During the medieval times where rural people could not afford to buy meat, they would opt to bake bread by themselves using the whole grains like wheat where it was readily accessible to them as most of them had their own agriculture.
However, unlike modern times where our foods have longer shelf life, the foods in the past where they made themselves were preservative-free and their bread would become stale in just a couple of days.
Hence, to prevent a wastage of food, people thought of combining milk and eggs into a custard mixture and pour it over the stale bread and have it as a dish. This was a pretty decent meal for those rural people where meat were scarce for them while eggs and milk which was accessible were a good source of protein for them as some of them actually reared chicken and cows.
I have personally tried this recipe myself and it turned out pretty decent.
You will need:
- 6 piece of bread (those Gardenia loafs)
- 1 1/2 cups of condensed milk
- 1/2 cup of cranberries
- 1 tsp of vanilla
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups of milk
- about 2 tbsp of butter
Steps:
1. Preheat the oven to 160 degrees.
2. Trim away the 4 edges of the bread
3. Spread the butter on both sides of the bread for all 6 slices (feel free to add more or reduce the butter) and sprinkle cranberries in as you put them into a baking tray
4. Combine milk, condensed milk, eggs and vanilla in a mixing bowl. Whisk well.
5. Pour the mixture into the baking tray and send it into the oven.
Bake for 30-40 mins until the top is golden brown.
6, Scoop them out onto a plate and enjoy it warm!
Optional:
Add a scoop of vanilla ice-cream on top of your Bread Pudding to enhance its flavour
